Hey Joe,
You know how sometimes you hear something and immediately
think bull shit (like when on one program Jim E. said his brother's shortwave radio got hit by lightening and it ran by itself, unplugged, for three months !!)..., well, I have always thought the same thing when I hear about Dylan turning the Beatles onto pot. Didn't the Beatles spend a length of time in some sleazy bars in Germany way before they ever heard about Dylan...and what are the chances that a joint didn't get passed around during that time? Joe...whadayathink?
Jay

JJJ, I know how you feel about that Beatles/Dylan thing. Hamburg was supposed to be a city where "anything goes" and it's hard to believe that pot wasn't available.
However, many years back, I got a book by the Beatles first manager, Allan Williams. It was called The Man Who Gave The Beatles Away. I was in high school, maybe tenth grade or so.
I don't have this anymore. Wish I did.
But the focus of the book was the hard slog of being second-or-third stringers in Liverpool, and the grueling experience they had in Hamburg, playing the Kaiserkellar and the Top Ten Club. I seem to remember that the group took a lot of uppers during the weeks in Hamburg, in order to keep up the pace of playing 6 to 8 hours a night in the club, with something like a ten minute break each hour. So, amphetamines and diet pills were the rule of the day. Or so I remember reading.
It's possible that they didn't discover pot until Dylan. But I'm reminded of the bit from the Rutles movie, where Bob Dylan turns the band onto tea. I've always liked that a little more...
Allan Williams, the man who gave the Beatles away, on the left of the pic.
Williams parted with the Beatles after their 1961 visit to Hamburg over money (they didn't want to pay him his fee).
From Wikipedia:
| Quote: | | In 1962, before Brian Epstein became the band's manager, he contacted Williams to make sure there were no remaining contractual ties. There were none, but Williams forthrightly told Epstein "Don't touch them with a fucking bargepole; they will let you down," |
