You-you-you-youtube, you!

Hey everyone--a buddy sent me this link a while back, and got me hooked on youtube.

It's a clip from the movie "Skidoo" in which Jackie Gleason takes a trip.  The best part about it is the "if you liked this, you might like..." link, which took me to all sorts of great band clips, including the Music Machine, Pretty Things, Creation, Small Faces and more!
I'll post more links as I find'em.

Music Machine!

Try this one, it's the Music Machine doing their classic "Talk Talk".

Boss!

It would help if I include the link:

Oh man!!!  It's the Seeds doing "Pushing too Hard"!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmHTyLBIZ1g

On Shebang!  Introduced by Casey Kasem!!

Dig!!!
cosmikdebris

One of the more bizarre things I've come across on youtube is this clip from Neil Young's "Human Highway" featuring Devo in brightly glowing radiation suits doing their famous cover of "It takes a worried man." A surreal video, if there ever was one.

Mod Madness!

Oh yeah!  It's the Creation, performing Making Time!

Wow, Thanx for these video links, Joe.
Never thought I'd get to see a Music Machine performance - too cool!

Oh, man...the Velvet Underground on Lawrence Welk!!! Shocked

As some of you may know, Mariska Veres, lead singer of The Shocking Blue passed away in early December '06.
They (she) will be featured on our next live show (2/3/07).
Here's a nice viddy of them performing their classic hit:

Monk Time!

Hey hey, check out the craziness of the Monks!  You've heard'em on LD, now watch them perform two wild numbers...the mysterious Monk Chant followed by Oh How To Do Now.

Outsiders--Lying all the time

Wow! Here's Lying All the Time, a great Kinks-like tune from the Dutch Outsiders, with the original lineup.

Wally Tax--vocals (and amazingly long hair for...what, 1966?)

Ronnie Splinter--electric 12 string

Tom Krabbendam--rhythm

Appie Rammers--bass

Buzz Busch--drums

I posted this separately, but since it's on youtube I wanted to put it here, too.

Zal Yanovsky's solo single, "As Long As You're Here"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcKoVzwiep8
Joe_Stax

Okay, this has nothing whatsoever to do with garage or psych, or even the '60's. But it made me laugh.

It's trio of buskers doing the 80's Buggles classic, Video Killed the Radio Star. Weird, but fun.

Monkees!

Hey, hey, it's the Monkees appearing on the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour in 1969, performing Teardrop City.

I really haven't paid too much attention to the post-Tork Monkees, but this is a pretty good song.

Davy's out of control, though.

Monkey Rock!

Does anyone remember the Saturday morning show Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp? It was kind of like Get Smart, but with monkeys.

In addition to hip spy action, there was a musical segment on the show. Lance had a group on the side called the Evolution Revolution, and they would do a song every week. There was even an album.

Anyway, here's a performance by the Evolution Revolution. The sound's not too good; sorry about that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmTmvBzNFY4
Astrakhan

Chimp rock? That's just weird. Did they cover other bands, too?
Joe_Stax

I don't think so. I used to have a copy of the album on cassette and all of the songs were "original", probably supplied by Don Kirshner, or the like.

It would have been cool if they'd done Apeman by the Kinks, though!
Joe_Stax

Oh man! It's My Indole Ring on the CBC!

The song is Orange Float Petals, in psychedelic black & white. It's a powerhouse performance. Dig it!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcG5Jrae7bI
JimENight

My Indole Ring is fantastic! Their sole album from 1968 is well worth seeking out! I can't believe they have been so overlooked for all these years.
JimENight

As someone who has known Joe Stax for nearly 20 (yipes) years now, I need to state publicly that his fixation on and slight obsession over Lancelot Link & The Evolution Revolution is extremely disturbing!
It was only a matter of time before he hit it up here on the forums... you've all been warned! Neutral

Monks video 1966

Noticed that the link Joe posted to the Monks viddy on youtube had been taken down. I went ahead and fixed the link on his post for y'all, and also, here 'tis:

True Lancelot Link story. (Doc should appreciate this, if he actually lurks around in here Laughing )
When the producers felt that "Lance" was getting a little too agressive on the set, due to his advancing Chimp puberty, he was sent off to a Vet......to be castrated! Shocked I'm not making this up! Crying or Very sad

Ouch! You can't make stuff like that up.

But that's showbiz, I suppose. Twisted Evil

Sheesh, how long was that show in production???

American Ruse http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6pfU9wli8g from "The Lively Spot". They're lippin' it to the album track here. Tyner definitely shows his rock star chops, though.
Kick Out The Jams http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4I8o3y5wP48 Live version from "Beat Club" on German TV. The producers of this show have been yanking videos off Youtube at warp speed so catch this one while you still can! Electrifying performance!!
Ramblin' Rose http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Cg0qJ-ieRk Post Rob footage with Wayne taking the lead vocal. Well, if you can call it a vocal. Laughing
From "Detroit Tube Works" 1972. It's amazing that this got on television at all. Kramer flips off the crowd and basically does all the crazy shit you still can't do on the box. Check out their backline for a view of some hangers-on passing a doobie the size of a Zeppelin back and forth. Laughing

Peace!

Quite a selection, Joe. I watched the Snobs with some amusement. You have to love the powdered wigs and regency gear. The numbers seemed a bit tame, though. Did they release any records?

I did love the Luv'd Ones, and noticed that the person who posted that also posted a number of other "home-made" clips of 60's tracks. Is this a common practice, do you think?

My question to the Lost Discs community: how do you feel about that? Should we only present vintage performance footage, or is it all right to post links to newer interpretations of 60's music?

If the answers are positive, I'd like to post a link to the Bootles!

Perhaps I'll post it anyway, and damn the torpedoes!

The "Tin Soldier" video seems to be altered by the person who posted it.
The audio is the mix heard on the Castle Communications L.P. "Collection" which was missing P.P. Arnold's back-up vocals. Shocked
It's kind of odd, watching her lip sync to....well......nothing!
At least she looks yummy in the clip! Just wish I could hear her as well.

Peace!

Yipe!! Sorry about that, everyone...I missed the lack of PP Arnold vocals on Tin Soldier.

Seeing The 13th Floor Elevators sync to their song on Dick Clark... amazing. Rocky Erickson comes off as some sorta ultra cool anti-Elvis.

A live version, early October 2007.  I saw them about a week before this performance, but Jon Langford was the same ball of energy then, bouncing and jumping throughout.  This man doesn't sleep: he's in the Mekons, the Waco Brothers, the Pine Valley Cosmonauts, does solo stuff, paints...amazing!

Sorry for the blandness of my post folks, but I hope my youtube links will color things a bit...
thanx JimE, this is awesome. I've spent the past hour checking out all your great posts friends. Especiallly you Joe...
This is the first time I've ever seen the Monks.

Ok, i'm going to get busy and post some things...be rigth back...

I LUV the Luv'd Ones. Char was the lead singer guitarist. Imagine how ahead they were. While girl groups were doing their best to sound like the the Supremes, these girls were rocking like no girls had before. I'm a fan of a new band called the Gore Gore Girls. The lead singer Amy Surdu told me she was influenced by Char Vinnedge. If you check them out, you can hear the similarities.

Re an earlier post. yes, I think we're being true to the era by posting vids that may not be original images of the band or, as well as posting bands they influence.

Okay, one more cause I've taken up enough valuable space...
One of my favs from The Era (caps intentional). The Bobby Fuller Four and one of their greatest but most overlooked songs:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKOw7hLa8Es

And JimE, I forgot to thank you for posting that ultr groovy Graham Bond vid "Gonks Go Beat"! How cool to see 2/3rds of Cream in Ginger Baker and the other guy! '-)))))))
(Like in the Seinfeld episode when Elaine goes backstage with Jerry to meet one of the 3 Tenors who she refers to as "the other one.")
George Elias

One thing I forgot about the BB4 vid...pay attention to the go-go dancers on the platforms behind the band. It's an example of what a lost art that is and how choreographed some of those dances were...just a thought.
George Elias

Sorry folks, I just couldn't stay away. (Actually I'm trying to set a record for first time posts.)

JIMe, YOU'VE CREATED A MONSTER!!!

Alex Chilton.
We all know how great he was with The Box Tops. But I think his greatest work was with Big Star in the 70s. (Even having one of their songs used as the title track of That 70s Show.) Now I know that the Box Tops aren't exactly "Lost Discs" material being a staple of oldies formats. But I believe Chilton was a sort of "Lost Genius" in the pantheon of rock along with people like Arthur Lee.
It's hard to believe that he wasn't much more than 18-20 yrs old when he made these appearances. Enjoy.

This a clip from the Haskell Wexler film "Medium Cool" from 1969. What makes this film so amazing is that Wexler weaves together a fictional love story through the all-too-real events of 1968 including the Democrat convention in Chicago. There's one problem with the credits though. All of the music is credited to Mike Bloomfield when, in fact, the opening track is actually a Love song named "Emotions" from Love's first LP...

I'm afraid that the same cannot be said for Captain Milkshake.

Cool

Joe, that vid of Humble Pie is amazing. They couldn't do that today...too long and cumbersome in this soundbite culture...

then it's truly diggable.

There was another clip of a mother speaking who's son was killed in Nam. Wow, what's that thing about those who refuse to learn from history?

As far as Medium Cool, seeing only clips doesn't do it justice. You've got to see the whole thing to savor it's Coolness...but say  no more...it's in the works right now...

Thank God Frampton never sold out...

The Bonzo Dog Band = black and white and weird all over.  Entertaining, though.

I have to say the clip for Look Out There's a Monster Coming disturbed me a bit, if only because of the make up on the band.  That period has to be the last time it was even remotely acceptable to do blackface, at least in England.  You'll note the guitar player isn't wearing makeup.  At least in this clip...

The ventriloquist business was funny.  Funny strange and funny ha-ha.

One question, though.  Were the vocals live?  It seemed obvious that the playing was mimed, but it seemed like they were actually singing.  Was this a common practice?  I'd always assumed that if a group was miming to a song, it was all prerecorded?  Question

All of the Bonzo video is weird.  The medley clip is probably the most straightforward in a "showbiz" kind of way, though.

I think that piece is a little older than the other ones, if only because there seem to be more band members on hand.  Originally there were anywhere up to a dozen Bonzos, but by the time they started recording it was down to about 7.  Given that someone else was on the drums while "Legs" Larry Smith was joining in with vocals and dancing suggests to me that the drummer on Equestrian Statue (and as the vent. dummy) was Sam Spoons, who, along with bassist Vernon Dudley Bohay-Nowell appeared on the first album, but left before the second.

Thinking of the second album, the Urban Spaceman clip looks like it was shot during the photo shoot for the second album cover (Donut in Granny's Greenhouse), using the same costumes and the dogs, etc.  I kept looking for Joel Druckman in the footage.  Druckman was an American living in the UK, and ended up playing bass for a bit with the Bonzos.  He can be heard speaking on the We Are Normal track, and is on the cover for  Donut.  Beyond that, he doesn't seem to have been with the group for long.

About the vocals, yeah, it looked like they were done 'live' to pre-recorded backing tracks.  I don't know how common that was.  Most 'performance' footage I've seen was usually lip-synced, too.  But as I think about it, the Small Faces stuff I posted a while ago, where they do the B-side of Ogdens looked like it had live vocals, too.

Here's an old favorite, Sam Hall by Frank Tovey.  It's from an excellent album called Tyranny and the Hired Hand.  Well worth a listen!

I was looking for the Monkees on Glen Campbell's show, and found this instead.  It's  a fuzzier, messier version of the song, but really good.  Does anyone know anything about this band?

Here's a pretty cool beat group, the Sorrows:

Man alive!  This is an absolute knockout--Earl Scruggs & his band jamming on a Dylan song with the Byrds!  Killer!!

Hey hey, I finally tracked down the Monkees doing "Teardrop City" live on the Glenn Campbell show.  Davy plays bass on this, and gets pretty carried away... Great song, though.

I've come across the trailer for the film the Touchables.  The theme was done by the UK Nirvana.  Great song, but I'm not too sure about the trailer.  Looks like it heads for BVD territory.

Hey, it's been a while since there've been any posts here!  Let's get things rolling again with Professor Longhair doing his classic "Tipitina" with the Meters!

This was the first song I heard by Fess (on the soundtrack of the Big Easy) and it's been a favorite ever since.

Like I sez, I ran across a copy of this album at a flea market on Labor Day Weekend & I kinda dig the title track. Here's the 1968 video promo -

Here's a slightly guilty favorite of mine, the Cream song Anyone for Tennis, which was done as a throwaway cut for the soundtrack to the film the Savage Seven.

I like the song, which is a supremely whimsical psychedelic ditty.  I've read that Clapton never liked the song, but it remains a fun song, and one of my fave Cream cuts.

I've never seen this clip before, and can't explain the frogs on the tray at the beginning and end...  Also, you can see how little the band thinks of doing this kind of promotion; Jack Bruce keeps his head down throughout, Ginger just looks bored and Clapton looks supremely pissed.  Enjoy!

Anyone for Tennis? Wouldn't it be nice?  It is a fun song, really.  A bit waspish in some of the lyrics, with references to the "Bentley driving guru who's putting up his price" (et tu, Maharishi?) and beggars staining the pavements with flourescent Christmas cheer in spite of the jolly tune.

And Joe, you're right.  EC does look quite ticked off!  Laughing

Elevation!

I just watched an excellent documentary about Roky Erickson.  It's called You're Gonna Miss Me.  I recommend it to everyone.

Since that's been on my mind, here's Roky and the 13th Floor Elevators on American Bandstand (!) doing You're Gonna Miss Me.  Dig that wild jug action!  In the documentary, there's some additional footage of Dick Clark talking to the band.  He heads over to Tommy Hall, the jug player, and asks him who leads the band, or to qoute, "Who's the head?" To which Tommy replies, "We're all heads."  Brilliant!

Skank or die!

Here's an odd scene... a look at dancing to ska music from the early 60's.  Learn those ska steps!

This is dynamite!  The Sonics' Psycho mashed up with some boss GO-GO dancing!

Anyone recognize the footage?  I'm stumped.
