Old Records As An Investment?

_

I just saw on the PBS TV

program "Antique Roadshow" an

autographed Elvis record on the "Sun"

record label that they said was worth

$2600. Is that for real do you think?

Are there some particular labels that are

most valuable? Are all old "Sun" records

valuable? I'm thinking it might be

worth a trip to the local moldy dank

record store to check out the "values".

I have a coworker who has an early Sun Records white label (deejay release) Elvis Presley 45. The Rockin' Records Price Guide says it's worth somewhere between two and four thousand dollars. Most of the early Sun Elvis 45s are valuable now, and command very high prices if they're in excellent condition.

There are lots of valuable records out there, especially rare releases by famous artists. Jane and I got a large pile of records from her brother, and I was very pleased to see a copy of "Introducing The Beatles" on Vee Jay Records, which is relatively valuable depending on the condition and edition. Unfortunately this is probably one of the single most bootlegged LPs of all time, and the copy that we got from Jane's brothes is a fake, which is practially worthless.

Most record stores use a price guide and will more than likely spot a rare or valuable record and price it accordingly. But prices vary widely from location to location and there are bargains to be had. There are people who put Pink Floyd's first album up for sale on the 'net for three hundred dollars, but I can get it locally for 20 bucks or less in average condition.

Yea man, I don't follow the value of the records all that closely. I know of collectors who are only in it for the money (great Zappa album, btw) and seem to only care about the condition and dollar value of a record. I'm in it for the kitch, and of course, the either really cool, overlooked B-side, or the laughably insane, bad novelty song or cover version.

But I do know that not all Sun label records are valuable. That's an easy mistake to make. Sure the early Elvis Sun releases are several thousand dollars in value. But most of the other Sun label stuff trades for anywhere from $100 down to 33 cents.

But you never know when you'll find a gem in the used stacks. Just last year I went thru the back room at some old vinyl shop and found a nice copy of an early record by The Tokens (of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" fame) on the Gary records label. Turns out it's worth over $100 - the guy gave it to me for 33 cents!
