Even goodtime oldies radio can't kill...A great song. I was listening to the Zombies earlier, and there's a part in Tell Her No where Colin Blunstone sings "no, no, no....NOOooo!" and it still gives me a chill to hear it, even if it's on oldies radio.
Anything that hits you the same way?

There actually is a way you can kill a brilliant song like that, Joe.
Sandwich it inbetween "This Diamond Ring" and "Billy Don't Be A Hero", like most oldies stations do.
In all seriousness, though, it's gotta be that moment in "I'll Take You There" where Mavis just really cuts loose. I don't care where the hell she's "takin'" me at that point. I just wanna goooooooo. Oooooohaaaaahhhh! Help me now!
Peace!

It may sound cliche, but I still get a thrill from that most overplayed of "oldies", Brown Eyed Girl. Some of Van Morrison's inflections and scatting break through even the miasma of Gary Lewis.
Still, it's best enjoyed away from the oldies radio format, where nothing detracts from its brilliance.

I just have to mention that way back when I was in a band, I could do a pretty thrashed punk version of This Diamond Ring. I didn't like the song, but I enjoyed the way we did that.
Later, I also punked up a song off of a Beers Family album called Dumbarton's Drums. The BF version was pretty square (in the tradition of the great folk scare), but I've since heard it by an amazing Scots duo called the Corries, and their version is absolutely gorgeous.

I think I missed the "Great Folk Scare". Glad I did, really.

Joe doing This Diamond Ring in a band reminds me of what I've been saying to some friends regarding some old-timey folk tunes: much of the time these things are so much more fun to play than to listen to...

I'm still trying to form an acoustic group that takes it's cue from The Kingston Trio, The Ramones and Oscar Brand. If it ever gets off the ground, it will be called The Folktards. Seriously!

No sooner had I posted, than I remembered a professor I had in college: he claimed that he and his sons had a group, and were called the Minstrel Cramps.
I think he may have just been trying to impress us. To what end, I've no idea. Besides, that was an awful name.

I like the sound of the Folktards, too.
Maybe we need a band name thread?

Fave band name of all time: The Conoiseurs.
It makes me think of a bunch of guys in silk Italian suits who come onstage swilling Chateau Lafitte and insult the crowd for being tasteless idiots. Sort of like Oasis in reverse.
Peace!

Hell, yea The Folktards? Brilliant.
Some guys I went to college with formed a short-lived punk outfit called The Vaginal Blood Farts.
Sorry guys, not trying to be crude - this was fer real.
