Cover Me!

Here's what happened: Kitty and I were over at Eat N Park having lunch the other day, and Satisfaction comes on the pa system. The song is just at the periphery of my hearing, but it's seeping into my brain, and it starts me thinking about Otis Redding.

Why Otis, you ask? Because Otis did a version of Satisfaction that makes it sound like he wrote the song. It's one of the best covers I've ever heard.

At the same time, Aretha Franklin owns Respect, which Otis wrote. And, while you probably can't top her version of the song, the take by the Rationals (on Cameo) is one of my favorites.

Here's the point of this post: How about we share some of our picks for Best Cover, Worst Cover and our Favorite Cover versions.

I was spinning Humble Pie's version of Buddy Holly's "Heartbeat" this morning and really digging it. The Knack did a respectable cover of this song, years later.

Peace!

Hey, Rockin' Art! I dig that version of Heartbeat too! I've got the album it's on (Town and Country), and that's my pick for the best record by the Pie.

I'll also mention the version of Stroll On that was on the show recently by the Kansas group Burlington Express. That's a fairly obscure Yardbirds song (I think it was only on the Blow Up soundtrack, and not issued as a single) from the too-short Beck/Page period. One of their best tracks, in my opinion.

I hate admitting this, but I also like Aerosmith's version of that song. Embarassed

Peace!

As big a mess as it was, the Sgt Pepper movie in the 70's yielded two good covers with Aerosmith's version of Come Together and the Earth Wind & Fire take of Got To Get You Into My Life.

It's not really a great cover, but there was a version of Lucifer Sam on one of the Rubble comps (I think) by a group called Graded Grains.

It's pretty good, but you can't top the original. However, it's cool to find a contemporary group covering the Floyd!

Another Yardbirds cover:  For Your Love by Humble Pie is amazing! It's a massive acoustic jam! I posted a link to a live performance of this in the youtube section.

This track doesn't seem to have been on any albums by the Pie, but it has turned up on a best of.
