Well, here's an interesting tidbit from the new issue of Billboard [10/11/08] it seems that some very small labels are releasing cassette only music.

It seems the whole business is a throwback to the cassette culture of the 80's (oh, sweet nostalgia!), with an emphasis on experimental/noise and alt folky-shoegazing musics.

Typically, they're done in very limited quantities, often with handmade packaging. Just like the good old days.

Sorry I don't quote the article proper, but I couldn't copy anything from Billboard's site (no sub, sorry.) and I don't have the article handy to transcribe. I do, however, have the addresses of the labels mentioned in the article; I thought to write those down...

Lost Sound Tapes seems to offer folk and pop sounds, and is expanding to CD-R as well.

Gnar seems to come in on the noise and ambient end of things.

I'm sure I have a tape player in a closet somewhere...

I've still got a crate of old cassettes in the house. Most of them aren't manufactured tapes, but comps I've made and been given by friends, and loads of music made by friends.

Good stuff, and even if I haven't listened to them in a while, they're still cherished for the sounds and the memories.
