Answer SongsHey, I can't say that I liked the My-Ding-A-Ling/My Pussycat double play, but it got me thinking about answer songs.
A classic one is Eve of Destruction by Barry McGuire, which was answered with Dawn of Correction by the Spokesmen.
Can anybody think of some others?

An easy one would be I'll Let You Hold My Hand by the Bootles.

Well, there's "Work With Me Annie" and "Dance With Me Henry".
Hank Ballard also did an answer song of his own, to "Annie".
It would have been hilarious if somebody had done an answer song to "You Don't Own Me" and made it as sexist and piggish as possible.

I think it might have been in the forums here, but there was a mention of an answer song to "Give The Drummer Some". Did anyone do a parody of that, in the vein of "Okay, Cut The Drummer Off." "Man, really, you gave him too much!" (as the drumming becomes more erratic and "out there".)
In that spirit, there's always The Nazz's "Loosen Up". Makes me laugh almost every time I hear it!

A couple of more answer songs:
My Degeneration by the Eyes. The Eyes were a mod group, and laid it down with some great tracks like I'm Rowed Out and When the Night Falls. This song was the flip of their second single (released in 1966) and is a reply to the Who's classic. This song's pretty good, too!
Since I just saw the Mekons the other day, I'm reminded that their debut single in 1977 was Never Been In A Riot, which called out the Clash single White Riot.

Well guys,
I have an entire section of 45s under the genre of "answer songs". One of the more recent ones I used on the show was "The Tiger's Wide Awake". Spun that one back in June when one of the guys from The Tokens passed.
Basic rule is that answer songs are pretty awful. There are some exceptions, the aforementioned record by The Eyes (as Joe pointed out) may be one of them - I need to dig that one out I have a reissue on vinyl somewhere around here...

While flipping through a box of 45s recently, I happened on a single called "Major Tom" by Peter Schilling. It came out in 1983, I believe.
It transpires that this is a sequel of sorts to David Bowie's classic Space Oddity.

The Mekons did a great song called Memphis, Egypt.
