Dig this site--nothing but photos of turntables. Some are high end, some are definitely not, but all pretty wild looking.

I recall seeing an add like this (maybe this exact one) hanging on the wall at a Satanic ritual once!
Anyone for a game of Husker Du? |

Found at http://www.boingboing.net/:
| Quote: | Mike Disher's custom turntables
POSTED BY DAVID PESCOVITZ, MARCH 19, 2008
Mike Disher works with my pals at OpenRoad.tv, the fantastic travel video site for the American West. On the OpenRoad.tv forum, Mike posted about his unusual hobby, constructing beautiful high-end turntables. From his site: |
| Quote: | | About 5 years ago I decided to try my hand at building a custom turntable. Turntables and mechanical watch and clock movements fascinate me. I view them as functional pieces of kinetic art. I based my turntable design on the legendary Rega P3, and I created a new, custom acrylic plinth and a set of feet. I also devised a way to hide the motor, and I improved the motor mounting system. The plinth rests on small silicone dots, providing added isolation. The result was a very modern looking table. I called it the P3 Skeleton. Skeleton is a watchmaking term for a movement in which material is removed from the plates and bridges to reveal the inner workings. A fellow audio enthusiast saw this table at my house and offered to buy it on the spot. I did not sell it, but I was happy that others appreciated my work. |
Pretty cool, huh? Here's a link to Mike Disher's page, where you can see more of his fab turntables!

Well. They have a distinctly futuristic/50's moderne feel to them. That turntable wouldn't look out of place on Star Trek (the classic 60's version) or someplace like this:
Mind you, I'd love to have one of those (turntable, not house, well, the house, too), but I can only imagine a bespoke turntable would be the highest of high end! _________________ What a shame Mary Jane caught a pain at the party! |

Those Mighty Tiny things sounded like crap! Horrid little noise-makers, they were.
Now if you find one on Ebay, they probably go for as much moola as a Thorens!
Anybody remember "Playtapes"? They weren't half bad.
Peace!

I found this at Unplggd.com. It looks gorgeous, and is part of a line of wooden turntables made by Audiowood. There's a great gallery at Audiowood's website.
